What is this environment thing I keep hearing about?
Oh yeah, we’ve been destroying the planet since the industrial age began. Aren’t we clever.
My job is to sell and engineer lighting control systems, and to give you an example, a warehouse I just worked on is now going to be able to save £100,000 per year in energy bills (half its current expenditure), or around 500 Tonnes of carbon per year. Thats about 100 times my own carbon imprint, saved per year. What does that mean?
Well slap my back…I’ve made a contribution. But what really is the scariest thing about that?
A multi million pound grossing commercial warehouse establishment is only consuming 100 times the carbon per year that your humble narrator is. That is environmental ultraviolence. Viddy this:
I drive to work when i could walk it in 25 minutes. I drive to Tesco when I could walk it in 10 minutes, although I couldn’t carry my enormous shopping cart back home on my own, nor could I ever apologise enough for the volume of plastic packaging I discard. I do recycle a lot of the products I waste, so its not the end of the world.
My personal efforts in the battle against the carbon cloud are as follows:
1) Recycling cans tins, cardboard, plastics, and glass wherver possible.
2) double glazing
3) installing a wood burning stove in my lounge to supplement my heating.
I can only conclude I’m not doing enough.
I could
1) Use a wood burning stove with boiler for my hot water
2) install Solar panels on the roof (although one could argue in the uk thats pointless)
3) Convert my car to biodiesel
4) use more natural products
5) cook with the wood stove
6) and no doubt a million other things
Perhaps one day I will realise the error of my ways……I am hiding just like the rest of you under the pretence of caring about the environment.
Henry Ford, a very astute fellow whom you may have heard of once said; “Chop your own wood, and it will warm you twice”.
I do chop my own wood. At least its a start………
